French probe Africa corruption

19/06/2007 21:13 - (SA)

Paris - The Paris public prosecutor’s office is investigating the presidents of Gabon and Congo on charges of receiving stolen goods, judicial sources said on Tuesday.

The investigation was opened after several French associations filed complaints in March against Omar Bongo of Gabon and the Congolese head of state, Denis Sassou-Nguesso, charging that the two leaders owned assets in France that had been financed with stolen public funds.

"This is a first," said attorney William Bourdon, head of the international organisation Sherpa, one of the plaintiffs in the case.

"Like other countries, France cannot increase its public international commitments to fight financial crimes while there are all these presumptions of embezzlement of public funds against the Bongo and Sassou-Nguesso families."
